Ethical AI in schools begins with limits
Before asking what AI can do, schools need to decide what it should not decide, collect or conceal.
The signal
Education involves children, sensitive records and decisions that can shape opportunity. Ethical use therefore requires stricter boundaries than a general productivity tool.
What the evidence asks us to notice
- No hidden high-stakes decisions.
- Clear age and consent rules.
- Data minimisation and secure access.
- Bias testing and human challenge routes.
- Visible sources and uncertainty.

A necessary limit
Compliance is necessary but not sufficient. A system can meet formal rules and still encourage over-reliance or reduce meaningful teacher review.
